Teaching Tips

This series may be used in any way that the teacher, parent or caregiver may see fit, however there are some tips that we can give you to get you on your way to teaching your special needs student.

  • Embrace repetition: The purpose of this workbook series is to slow the pace as compared to typical workbooks. Take advantage of the slower pace to allow the student to truly become comfortable with the new letter or number before moving on to harder tasks.
  • Tracing: Each lesson begins with a tracing page. It is important to have the student trace the letter or number with either a finger or writing utensil in order to begin creating the muscle memory and a tactile familiarity with the letter or number to be learned
  • Each activity book begins with errorless teaching pages. Be sure to familiarize your student with the letter or number for that book and reinforce (using praise or a preferred reinforcer) the proper completion of the activity. All student efforts should always garner a form of reinforcement.
  • Data may be recorded on a per page basis or on the basis of the entire book. ABA teachers can record trial data at the bottom of each page.  We do recommend reproducing early pages to establish familiarity with new letters or numbers however we ultimately believe the student should be allowed the successful feeling of completing the entire book.
  • Initial letter and number array pages feature darkened letters or numbers as an imbedded prompt. Teachers should always attempt to use the least amount of prompting necessary. If additional prompting is needed always be sure to fade (eliminate) extraneous prompts as soon as possible.
  • The workbooks always conclude with some fun activities such as connecting the clown’s hand to the balloons or a maze. Our wish is to establish reaching these pages as intrinsic motivation within the work itself. When successful work becomes the motivator/reinforcement itself you have won half the battle!!

Good luck, and please feel free to contact us with any concerns or questions you may have regarding these workbooks.
